Christoph Herndler: Notational Graphics

the artist will be present, and discuss his work with Nikolaus Gerszewski

the Ensemble FOCC will perform his music

As a student of Roman Haubenstock-Ramati, Herndler has continued the approach of graphic notation, and developed his own medium from it: the ‘Notational Graphic’, a form of process-notation, that provides a visual image of the music’s temporal structure, along with some verbal guidelines for the selection and generation of the sound material.

Visually these works readily function as autonomous works of abstract-geometric art. In fact they expand the reading of early 20th century abstract painting, as ‘visual music’, by providing concrete directions for a musical realization. This in mind, they may even allow for a new reading of the abstract art of the past; precisely by transfering its underlying ‘Gestalt’-principles to an actual sonic form.
